BDSM Toy Glossary

Whether you are new to BDSM or a semi-experienced player it is always good to have a basic idea of what items should be in your BDSM Toybox.  There are basic categories of items that any practitioner of BDSM should at least be familiar with.  Then, of course, there are some sub-categories as well. It is also important to remember that ANY sexual enhancement product can be used as part of BDSM in the right situation, but these items are more specialized.

BDSM Terms

MasterKink Bondage RopeBASIC / SILK / ROPE/ TAPE RESTRAINTS:  Of course there are a ton of different restraints that you can choose from, but “basic” restraints are a catch-all, use in many different ways, alternative purpose type of item.  Basic restraints often come as a ribbon or rope or even tape and can be used in infinite amount of ways.

SPECIALIZED RESTRAINTS:  Specialized restraints refer to restraints which place the submissive in a specific position.  Hog-tie restraints or leash-type restraints are examples of specialized restraints.  There are fewer options here as the restraint is fashioned in such a way as to hold a submissive in a specific way.

SPREADER BARS:  Spreader bars are a very special subcategory of restraints.  These items are designed to go between the legs, holding them apart, and the bar can be suspended, attached to a headboard, or otherwise altered to hold the submissive’s legs apart in a specific manner, or even attach the wrists to the bar as well.

HANDCUFFS & WRIST RESTRAINTS: Most likely the first thing most people think of with regards to BDSM are handcuffs.  Available in a standard metal cuff or a fur-lined cuff for you nicer Dominants, handcuffs are the super portable, yet very effective, bondage device. See All MasterKink Restraints

BLINDFOLDS:  These are a MUST have for any BDSM couple.  Blindfolds come in a variety of materials, colors and styles.  Although, the basic function of a blindfold is to, well, make the submissive blind while play is occurring.  Blindfolds are inexpensive and fun ways to add to play.

PADDLES:  Paddles come in a variety of sizes, colors and styles, but ultimately the main characteristic of a paddle is a flat surface on a handle in which the submissive can be spanked.

Synthetic Flogger WhipFLOGGERS:  Floggers are unique items that can be used for both pleasing and punishing.  The long tethers (often made from soft leather) dangle off of a handle and can be used to whip or tease the submissive.  Floggers come in a variety of sizes with different length tethers as well as very decorative handles.

RIDING CROP: Not just for horse riding anymore, riding crops are lovely little additions to any BDSM toybox.  They pack a powerful punch if used correctly but can also be fun and flirty and used in a more gentle way.

NIPPLE CLAMPS:  Not for the faint of heart, nipple clamps pinch the nipple providing a very unique pain/pleasure dynamic.  Some clamps are meant for beginners and do not pinch hard or tight, but other clamps mean serious business and are definitely not for the ultra-sensitive.

BALL GAGS:  Ball gags are used to silence the submissive.  With multiple styles to choose from, some ball gags have attachments (like dildos) as well.  Basically, however, the ball gag is a strap that goes around the submissive’s head and has a “gag” of some type that goes into the mouth.

COCK CAGES:  Cock cages are fun little inventions that imprison his penis inside a cage.  There are various types to these (some with lock and keys even) and you can have a lot of fun keeping your lover from exploring his fullest potential when aroused, if you catch my drift.

BUTT PLUGS:  Anal play is not always a part of BDSM play, but often is.  Butt plugs come in plain, vibrating, large, super small and fun ones – like animal tails!  Animal tail plugs can also factor in with role play or animal play, which is sometimes a cross activity for some BDSM players.

Strap On Harness Sex ToySTRAP ONS: Traditionally, strap on dildos were used for women to penetrate other women.  However, a strap-on can be used for a woman to penetrate a man as well.  These are handy little items for those Dommes who really want to make submissives of their men.

ANAL HOOKS:  These “fish hook” looking devices are designed to insert into the anal canal (ball side) while the other side goes up the butt crack and can be attached in any number of tethering ways.  Including suspension.  Experimenting with anal hooks can be a fun part of BDSM play.
